In 2015, disc brake road bikes have been introduced to the World Tour. At that time, due to the disc brakes causing certain injuries in several major crashes, many riders questioned the safety of their disc brakes and were suspended.
Everyone has been pursuing the road of bicycle safety and ushered in the era of disc brakes. After nearly three years of hard work and gradual updates, the current disc brakes have been accepted by many drivers. Finally, on July 1, 2018, UCI officially approved it for World Tour competitions. Many manufacturers have introduced safe Disc brake type.
In the process of accepting disc brakes, it can be seen that disc brakes must be recognized by everyone for their excellent aspects, and they also have certain shortcomings. It took so long to be recognized by everyone, right? So, let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of disc brakes, shall we?
Advantage 1, the braking distance is short
Disc brakes can make the vehicle have better braking performance and provide a safer ride. This is the biggest advantage of disc brakes. In the same riding process, disc brakes have higher stability and flexibility. The distance is shorter, providing greater safety, and can also make going downhill and cornering smoother.
Advantage 2, more labor-saving
The pressing force required by the disc brake is relatively small. It only needs two fingers to press lightly to achieve sufficient braking force. When riding, pressing the brake will be faster, labor-saving and efficient. It will be very deep, and the feeling of hand numbness and numbness will no longer appear due to long-term pressing. And for those with smaller hands, the disc brakes will be easier to operate, which is also a great boon for small-hand riders.
Advantage 3. No wear and tear of the wheel set
Due to the brake structure of the disc brake itself, riders no longer need to worry about the problem of burning the frame, which can greatly increase the service life of the wheel set. It will not wear the wheel frame or even burn the frame due to long-term braking. This is a great boon for those who love carbon rims.
Advantage 4. Good weather resistance
In rainy days or other wet conditions, disc brakes can still maintain the best braking performance. Unlike C-clamp (or V-clamp) brakes, the braking force will be obvious due to the rim stained with sand and other conditions. Disc brakes have little effect on the braking force of the brakes!
Disadvantage 1, heavy weight
From the structure of disc brakes, its weight will increase slightly compared to other types of brakes. Cars of the same style and level, and with disc brakes, will be about 300-400g heavier than rim brakes. The main thing is to focus on the disc brake wheel set.
Disadvantage 2, the structure is complex
Disc brakes are composed of brake discs, calipers, pads and oil pumps connected to the wheels. In terms of control, it is also divided into line control and oil braking, and the high-pressure brake oil is used to push the brake pad to clamp the brake disc to produce a braking effect. Compared with other rim brake brakes, the structure is correspondingly more complicated.
Disadvantage 3, not easy to maintain
Special attention should be paid to the maintenance of disc brakes. If the discs or brakes cause excessive wear of the pads, it may cause danger; the hydraulic disc brakes need to be exhausted when they are filled with oil, otherwise the hydraulic transmission will be affected. In addition, the disc brakes make the discs very close to the disc, which will rub against each other due to the deformation of the disc due to temperature or external force. It is difficult to adjust the phenomenon such as abnormal noise at this time, even professional technicians sometimes have to adjust for a long time.
Disadvantage 4, high price
As we all know, the price of the same disc brake version and other rim brake versions will be a bit higher. This is because the various components of the disc brake are numerous. Of course, the price will be higher than that of the rim brake.
No matter what kind of braking system you prefer, disc brakes have become mainstream today. No matter what kind of brakes, better and more careful operation is required to provide a safer ride, keep danger away from everyone, and ride forever on lighter and faster riding roads.
The “out-of-stock tide” brought about by the epidemic has made it difficult to find a bike in the cycling circle. Even if some brands can order a bike, the delivery time varies from a few months to more than half a year. There are many bike fans who can’t wait to turn their attention to […]
Whether you’re a big cyclist or a novice cyclist, who hasn’t made some mistakes on the bike? For example, when the new bike is installed, the vehicle accessories are installed incorrectly, the equipment model is not matched when the accessories are upgraded, the fault judgment is wrong, and there is wasted effort in disassembly and […]
With the full popularity of the disc brake system for road bikes, the road bike market has completely resolved the debate between disc brakes and rim brakes. It can be said that disc brakes have completely taken over the rim brakes. But in road disc brakes, there is another debate, so is it better to […]
Today, most mountain bikes on the market are equipped with front fork shock absorbers, and even many gravel bikes are equipped with micro-travel shock absorbers in order to cope with more complex road conditions. There is enough suspension travel on a bicycle to measure the bumps that the bicycle can absorb, so what kind of […]
