the installation of camel bag

Isn’t the pursuit of speed on long-distance riding? There’s always a group of people trying to get faster.

In the case of long-distance riding for many days, the camel bag loaded on the bike has undoubtedly become a “burden” that the riders love and hate, and it is also one of the important factors affecting the riding speed. You may not know that the installation location of the camel bag will also greatly affect your speed.

 Experiment

The tester used the Surly trekking bike to load a 15kg camel bag and tested it at a bicycle venue in Melbourne with a power of 200 watts. The experiment was divided into 4 groups: two 21-liter camel bags were loaded on the front wheel, and two 21-liter camel bags were loaded on the front wheel. The rear wheel, front and rear each load 2 camel bags and top tube bag + tail bag + front bag. The total load of the four camel bag installation methods is the same.

 Experimental results

Top tube package + tail package + first package: 20 laps @ average 200.5 watts

38.262 sec/lap

119.34 seconds/km

30.17 km/h

Predicted 100km ride time: 3:18:54

Rear wheel load 2 camels: 20 laps @ 199.5 watts average

40.931 sec/lap

127.66 sec/km

28.20 km/h

Predicted 100km ride time: +12 minutes (6.5% slower)

Front wheel load 2 camels: 20 laps @ 199 watts average

40.89 sec/lap

127.54 seconds/km

28.23 km/h

Predicted 100km ride time: +12 minutes (6.4% slower)

Front and rear wheels each loaded with 2 camels: 20 laps @ average 200 watts

41.542 sec/lap

129.57 sec/km

27.78 km/h

Predicted 100km ride time: +17 minutes (7.9% slower)

Result analysis

In the case of the same load weight, the installation position of the camel bag will affect the aerodynamic performance to varying degrees, thereby affecting the riding speed.

The aerodynamic performance of the front wheel or rear wheel alone loaded camel bag is almost the same.

The aerodynamic performance of each load camel bag on the front and rear wheels is the worst.

Does aero performance really matter on long rides?

The farther you ride, the more important your aerodynamics are

The flatter the ride, the more important the aerodynamics

The steeper the ride, or the heavier the load, the less important the aerodynamics
