The tire is the most direct contact part between the bicycle and the ground, which will have a significant impact on the rider’s riding style. The importance of a suitable pair of mountain tires for riding is self-evident. There are many types of mountain tires on the market, so how should we choose a pair of tires that suit us? Consider the following 4 factors:
Tire width
The width of the tires is critical. Wider tires will roll more consistently on soft or rough terrain, and you’ll find more and more mountain tires are getting wider. The obvious example is XC races are equipped with 2.4 wide tires. Years ago, it was still the mainstream of many trail bikes or AM models, and now the tires of these bikes have reached 2.6 tire width. But wider tires are not suitable for everyone or all frames because they increase drag or require more frame tire space.
Tread pattern
Tread pattern is also a key factor in tire selection. Tall, widely spaced tires are great for muddy or loose terrain, while shorter tread blocks tend to have better rolling efficiency and are suitable for riding on hard surfaces.
Compound
Most mountain bike tires are available in a variety of rubber compounds. The softer compound grips better on roots and rocks and has a tighter ride feel because the rubber absorbs more energy from bumps. The downside is faster wear and more rolling resistance. Harder rubber compounds are relatively less likely to puncture and allow for lower tire pressures, making them more supportive when cornering.
Front or rear
Mountain bike tires are becoming more specialized, and they are designed for different uses on the front and rear wheels. Rolling resistance and puncture protection are normally more important on the rear wheel, as it supports most of the rider’s weight, while tire grip on the front wheel is more important to prevent the front wheel from sliding around corners.

The “out-of-stock tide” brought about by the epidemic has made it difficult to find a bike in the cycling circle. Even if some brands can order a bike, the delivery time varies from a few months to more than half a year. There are many bike fans who can’t wait to turn their attention to […]
Whether you’re a big cyclist or a novice cyclist, who hasn’t made some mistakes on the bike? For example, when the new bike is installed, the vehicle accessories are installed incorrectly, the equipment model is not matched when the accessories are upgraded, the fault judgment is wrong, and there is wasted effort in disassembly and […]
With the full popularity of the disc brake system for road bikes, the road bike market has completely resolved the debate between disc brakes and rim brakes. It can be said that disc brakes have completely taken over the rim brakes. But in road disc brakes, there is another debate, so is it better to […]
Today, most mountain bikes on the market are equipped with front fork shock absorbers, and even many gravel bikes are equipped with micro-travel shock absorbers in order to cope with more complex road conditions. There is enough suspension travel on a bicycle to measure the bumps that the bicycle can absorb, so what kind of […]
