road bike brake disc

In the era of disc brakes on the road bike, the specifications of the discs will not only affect the performance of braking, but also affect the logistics work in professional competitions. Different disc specifications are not compatible for use, which is a test of the level of neutral service. So why do manufacturers use 140mm or 160mm discs for road bikes?

In addition to the logistical issues mentioned above, the difference in the specifications of the discs has the greatest impact on the performance of the braking force, but few road bikes are equipped with 180mm discs. Do the manufacturers think that road bikes do not need it? Let’s see how the kit branding is explained.

Campagnolo: “We think 140mm discs are the best fit for our aesthetic needs, but for many riders over 80kg, the stopping power of 140mm discs may not be enough for them. That’s why we recommend riders use the front 160mm, The reason for the rear 140mm rotor. And we think that only the E-Bike may need to have a 180mm rotor.”

SRAM: “We recommend using 160mm discs on road bikes to ensure the best braking effect. In addition, the larger discs have a larger cooling area, which can further improve the overall performance of the brakes. Of course, 160/140 discs the configuration is not infeasible. When braking, the overall center of gravity is forward, and it is more dependent on the braking force of the front brake. If the rear wheel braking force is strong and the rear wheel locks and slips at this time, it is not a good thing. Therefore, the rear wheel is equipped with a weaker braking force. 140mm discs are also a viable option, which also saves the weight of the bikes.”

Shimano: “The 160mm discs have stronger stopping power and are better able to handle certain situations.”
